The History of Information Technology
Today information spreads very fast thanks to cell phones, television and the internet. But it hasn’t always been that way and that is what we now shall inform you about. We think that we are living in the best age of the IT: s timeline but that is maybe just because we don’t know so much about the other ages, both the future and the past.
There are different versions of the radio that makes spreading news incredible fast. The first one is the spark-gap radio that was invented by Nikola Tesla. But soon people realized that this spark-gap radio only could be used by one person in an area then Reginald Fessenden invented the AM-radio which made it possible to use several different amplitudes but the same frequency. But the radio really got popular when the FM-radio came. Because then they could enjoy listening to live sport events, music or news undisturbed by any other electrical products or devices thanks to the usage of different frequencies. The FM-radio was invented by Edwin Armstrong. The fact that 77% of people over the age of 12 listens to radio everyday makes it one of our main resources for spreading news fast. The Average adult listens to the radio 3 hours a day.. It is especially good for travelers because when you travel it is hard to keep your self up to date with the latest events but with the radio by your side you never need to feel out of date. Only in the U.S there is 12000 radio channels and of them there is about 10000 commercial financed ones which means that the more than 50 year old invention still revenues money to companies that uses it. This means that not only news spreads via it but commercials for new products or offers also makes a big part of the channels active broadcast time.
The person that invented the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell and his partner Thomas Watson. He was born in 1847 and at year 1876 he invented the telephone. He seems to have been a very social person because he invented many things that make talking to each other easier, like learning deaf people how to speak.
The telephone changed how people could live. They no longer needed to decide which places to go to and when al the time. Instead they could just give the person they want to meet a ring and then make an appointment or why not having the meeting speaking in the phone. The first cellular phone came already in the 1960’s but it didn’t come to
The television, some say it has enslaved mankind but others say its one of our history’s greatest inventions. But I don’t care I’m here to inform you of its history. Today the average child watches TV 3-4 hours a day.
The television was already invented at 1923 by a man called John Logie Baird who lived between 1888 and 1946. But he was not alone in the quest to entertain the rest of the world. There wore other like Vladimir Zworykin who invented the picture tube. But the first man who presented a whole television Philo Taylor Farnsworth.
In 1957 10000 people in
In this time the cameras had no zoom function but five different objectives that the camera-man had to switch between manually when the camera wasn’t used.
This was the time when more and more people get their one television. More programs were added but there was still only one canal.
In 1969 another canal was founded in
Now there came a interesting invention called the video witch made it possible to record what was sent on the TV. The whole concept with renting was also made possible. It also helped a great deal when reporters made their stories out of the studio. 1987 the third canal started airing from
In the year 1990 the fourth canal TV4 was founded. After this all kinds of new canals starting popping up in
The abacus was the first sight of an invention like the computer. The next step in the progress was the calculator which was invented already in 1623 by William Schickard. The first programmable calculator came in 1941 and 2 years later the first computer, ENIAC came. But it wasn’t until the IBM Company invented a user friendly computer that people in offices around the world could use to solve simple math problems and such. Today it has grown to an tool that is used by everyone each day. Thanks to the computer IBM got 100 Billions in revenue. The next step was the World Wide Web that Tim Berners-Lee developed in 1991 which started the WWW history by providing the world with a web server that was reachable by anyone connected to the internet.
A thing that popped up in our heads when we were doing this assignment is that we always seem to like the current information technology and we will always think back and think that we couldn’t live without that special thing, like our cell phones, but the fact is that we could have lived without them. But the fact is that the IT development always goes further and it is there the shoe does not fit the foot. The Development of the IT is becoming more and more intimate with how people think and acts. We are becoming more dependant of the new age stuff and less dependant of the life itself. The progress of the IT also affects the jobs available because it makes it easier and less expensive to produce products or services.
And about the future we only hope that the IT don’t goes to far because that will cause serious problems, like World Wars or such.
